Tram‑tastic Trek to Uetliberg (Now With a Thrifty Twist!)

Zurich is one of those rare cities where you can hike a mountain, thrift a vintage sweater, sip a perfect cappuccino, and still be back in your hotel before dinner. If you love mixing nature, city charm, and a little treasure hunting, this guide is your perfect companion.

Today, we’re heading up to Uetliberg, Zurich’s beloved local mountain — and weaving in a few of my favorite thrift shops you can explore before or after your hike. I’ve also added space for my curated GetYourGuide recommendations, so you can explore Zurich like a pro. Make sure you include the discount code: WANDERWITHMICHAEL5, so you can save money in the GetYourGuide app.

Let’s get into it.

Step 1: Get App‑Savvy

Before you do anything, download the SBB Mobile app. It’s the Swiss travel cheat code. The website works too, but the app makes everything smoother.

Plan Your Journey: My hotel was across from Toni‑Areal Station, so I plugged in Toni‑Areal → Uetliberg. The app handled the rest like a Swiss wizard. 🧙‍♂️✨

Step 2: Toni‑Areal → Zurich HB

Hop on Tram 4 toward Zurich HB. It’s a breezy 15‑minute ride — perfect for snapping a few aesthetic tram shots. Pro tip: Try not to look too much like a tourist.

Step 3: Transfer at Zurich HB

Follow the signs to the train platforms and look for the S10 to Uetliberg. It’s like a treasure hunt, but with fewer pirates and more precision.

Step 4: Zurich HB → Uetliberg

Board the S10 and grab a window seat. Trust me — the views are chef’s‑kiss cinematic.

Step 5: Arrive + Explore

Step off the train, breathe in that crisp mountain air, and let the adventure begin. 🏞️

What to Do at Uetliberg

  • Panoramic Views: Zurich, the lake, the Alps — all in one sweeping frame.
  • Planet Trail: A cosmic hike through a scale model of the solar system.
  • Uetliberg Tower: Climb it for an even higher vantage point.
  • Seasonal Beauty: Autumn golds, winter snow, spring blooms — she’s always serving.

✨ Thrift Shops to Explore Before or After Your Hike

Zurich’s thrift scene is curated, stylish, and full of unexpected gems — perfect for travelers who love mixing adventure with a little sustainable shopping.

🛍️ Freeshop Zürich (Kreis 4)

A cozy, community‑driven shop with rotating pre‑loved pieces. Great for scarves, sweaters, and unexpected finds.

🛍️ Heilsarmee Brocki (Multiple Locations)

Zurich’s version of a Salvation Army thrift — bigger selection, great prices, and sometimes shockingly good vintage outerwear.

🛍️ Zürcher Brockenhaus (Near HB)

Perfect if you’re already transferring at Zurich HB. Think curated vintage, Swiss‑made goods, and unique accessories.

🛍️ The New New (Kreis 3)

Trendy, modern, and beautifully organized. Ideal for travelers who want a boutique‑thrift vibe.

Pro Tip: Hit a thrift shop before your hike to pick up a cozy layer, or stop by after to reward yourself with a treasure.
